Level 1 Drought Declaration

Posted on: October 30th, 2019

October 28, 2019 – Our local water system has continued to have an abundant and consistent supply from the Ocmulgee River during the drought of this past summer and early autumn. Still, we are thankful for the rains received over the last ten days and count our blessings for the mighty river that supplies Butts County.

Customers should be aware that due to the extremely dry conditions experienced August through October, the Georgia Environmental Protection Division has declared a Level 1 drought for 130 Georgia counties, including Butts. During a Level 1 drought, all public water systems are required to implement a public information campaign about drought conditions.

The permanent outdoor water use schedule required under the Georgia Water Stewardship Act of 2010 remains in place. It limits outdoor water use year-round to the hours between 4 p.m. and 10 a.m.

Please note that the City of Griffin has received a variance for a Level 2 drought response. This restricts outdoor watering to two days a week. This affects only customers in the far southwest corner of Butts County where we buy water from Griffin. This includes Chappell Mill Road, Fenner Road, and the Brushy Creek subdivision. The particular rules restrictions for a Level 2 drought can be found at this web address: http://rules.sos.ga.gov/gac/391-3-30?urlRedirected=yes&data=admin&lookingfor=391-3-30
